Dawood’s man owns food joint in Karachi, says NIA
NEW DELHI: Top D-Company operative Dawood bhai Patel, alias Javed Chikna, has a family-owned fast-food restaurant in Karachi, Cafe Equinox, according to the chargesheet recently filed by the NIA in the Bharuch double murder case. The cafe, a senior NIA official told, is run by his son.
The chargesheet, which names Chikna as a wanted accused, lists his two addresses in Pakistan. These include a Tower near Bagh Ibne Qasim, Clifton, Karachi. Incidentally, Clifton also houses the residence of Javed’s boss and underworld kingpin Dawood Ibrahim. The other address mentioned is D5, Myanmar Arcade, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulshan Psychiatric Hospital, Karachi. Chikna is accused of conspiring to kill at least four persons – Shirish Bhai Bangali, Advocate Modi, Viral Desai and Jaykar Maharaj – identified by co-accused Zahidmiya alias Jao as part of a larger conspiracy to target persons belonging to a particular section of society, “especially those with RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal or BJP background”, who were involved in the 2002 Gujarat riots and perceived to be anti-Muslim.
According to an NIA officer, D-company fugitives like Javed are under growing pressure from Pakistani agencies like ISI, which have been harbouring them for long, to carry out subversive and terrorist acts in India. The officer said it was not clear whether the Karachi restaurant was a genuine income-earning venture for Javed and his family or only a front for their underworld activities.
The chargesheet says Chikna arranged arms for the Bharuch murders twice, first to be delivered in Mumbai and then in Surat. The first set of weapons was found defective as magazines of pistols were loose, following which Chikna arranged another set through Ashfaq Ansari, a Pakistani national based in Saudi Arabia. This set was delivered in Surat. Chikna also arranged Rs 5 lakh payment through hawala route to compensate his associates in the murders. Fawad Ingariya, a Dubai-based Pakistani, told Shehzad Majeed Godil, an Indian settled in Dubai, to send Rs 5 lakh to India.
He passed on the instructions to his Mumbai agent, and subsequently a firm in Surat delivered Rs 5 lakh to accused Haider Ali. These proceeds were later distributed in Ajmer.
Abid Patel, Javed’s brother who was earlier arrested from Nepal, has three addresses mentioned against his name in the chargesheet. These include 6, Redley Terrace, Harmit Road, Canning Town, E-16, 4 JH, London, UK; Fietas, Johanessburg, South Africa; and R No 6, Aatmaram Building, Balamia Lane, Mahim, Mumbai.
Zahidmiya, another wanted accused, is believed to be based in South Africa. His address listed in the chargesheet is 23, Malan Road, Korsten, Durban Road, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
