Modi betrayed people: Sonia
All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi has said that the BJP-RSS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are afraid of the Congress party because it stood for the rights of farmers, labourers, minorities, Dalits, women, Adivasis, and everything that represented secular India.
Addressing an election rally at Puthirikandam Maidan here on Monday, Ms. Gandhi said the BJP-RSS and Mr. Modi were afraid that the Congress would expose its communal agenda.
Accusing the Modi government of indulging in character assassination of its political opponents, she said: “We shall not bow to their pressure. We are not afraid of harassment. We will continue to fight for what is good for the people,’’ she said.
Flays Modi government
Ms. Gandhi said the Modi government was hitting at the roots of the country’s democratic traditions by toppling elected governments in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Mr. Modi and his government did not believe in constitutional and parliamentary norms. Mr. Modi had come to power by making all kinds of promises. At the end of two years after he assumed office, he had betrayed the people’s mandate, Ms Gandhi said.
He had promised lakhs of jobs and to control the rise in prices of essential commodities. None of these had been fulfilled.
The Modi government mobilised revenue from taxing the people. The prices of petroleum products had come down, but not the excise duty. It had taken away the earnings of the middle class by tampering with the Provident Fund rates. Rich businessmen, who cheated the exchequer of thousands of crores, were allowed to run away from the country, she said.
To Mr. Modi’s charges that Kerala had not witnessed any development, Ms. Gandhi said the BJP government had turned a deaf ear to the Kerala government’s plea for assistance to farmers who were facing crash in prices of commodities. Mr. Modi had refused to declare Kerala as a drought affected State. The UDF government, led by Oommen Chandy, had succeeded in leading the State towards development, despite the non-cooperation of the Modi government.
She criticised the CPI(M) for its violent politics. The LDF had done everything in the last five years against the UDF government. The UDF is clear about its objectives, but humble in its approach, she said.
