Drivers protest against ban on diesel cabs
Taxi drivers in the Capital protested outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence on Sunday against the ban on diesel cabs.
The protesters, under the banner of Delhi Taxi Transport Association, later held a rally at Jantar Mantar, which was addressed by Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta.
Mr. Gupta said he would lead a delegation of drivers holding All India Tourist Permits (AITP) to Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday and apprise him of the issues arising out of the ban.
Sanjay Samrat of Delhi Taxi Transport Association said their demands included allowing existing AITP holders to ply their vehicles as long as the validity of the permits lasted. “We also want the government to keep us in the loop before formulating any policy that can affect our lives. It seems only diesel taxis pollute and not the lakhs of private cars that also run on diesel,” Mr. Samrat said.
The ban, which came into force into May 1, has affected over 27,000 taxi drivers.
