Jayalalithaa promises flood-free city
A day after the release of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) manifesto was released, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa promised a city free of floods while campaigning on the crowded streets of R.K. Nagar constituency on Friday evening.
Striking an emotional chord, she appealed to the voters to help her win by a bigger margin.
At five places
Hitting the road for the first time this elections, the Chief Minister spoke from her campaign van at five different places in the constituency that elected her to the Assembly last June by a record margin of 1.52 lakh votes.
Ms. Jayalalithaa did not forget to recall her tour of the constituency when the city was submerged during the “historic” November-December floods last year. “I personally studied the damage caused by the floods and took up the relief work. I personally met you all and promised to stand by you,” she said. Detailing the relief and rehabilitation efforts, she promised that steps would be taken to construct a stormwater drainage system that could drain any amount of rainwater.
Focusing on fisherfolk and her plans for the community, she said the AIADMK government had refurbished the Kasimedu fishing harbor at a cost of Rs. 92.63 crore. The monthly assistance to fisherfolk will be increased to Rs. 5,000 every month. The government will also construct houses for the community,” she said.
She said how her government had done more to the constituency than the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). “The DMK spent just Rs. 43 lakh towards drinking water and Rs. 50 lakh to treat sewage whereas the AIADMK government has spent Rs. 6.44 crore and Rs. 17.48 crore on these projects,” she said.
Devoting much of her time to describing the schemes taken up in the constituency, she repeated her bouquet full of poll promises to the delight of the public. With catchy slogans like ‘I am because of you; I am for you’ and ‘You are my breath,’ Ms. Jayalalithaa asked the voters to give her another
opportunity to serve them better.
