AAI seeks warrant for Mallya’s arrest
NEW DELHI: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sought a warrant for the arrest of wilful defaulter Vijay Mallya from a Mumbai court in connection with two cases of cheques bouncing. The cheques were for over Rs 100 crore.
In a statement, AAI said: “The court of 63rd Metropolitan Magistrate, Andheri, Mumbai has reserved orders on two applications of AAI, in two cases of cheque bouncing of over Rs. 100 crore against Kingfisher Airlines and others, pending in the court after hearing the arguments recently.”
“The two applications filed by AAI sought cancellation of permanent exemption granted to Mallya and seeking warrant of arrest,” the statement added.
The state-run airport operator has argued that since Mallya’s passport has been cancelled, “the condition of appearance through advocate does not survive and the advocate appearing for him may not be able to produce him in court in case of any order by the court.”
The court has reserved the orders for Friday. Mallya left India on March 2 and is in UK since then.
