Lineman’s death triggers protest; police fire in air
The death of a lineman working for the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) sparked off a protest at Lokasara village in the district on Friday, forcing the Mandya subdivision police to fire a few rounds in the air and use lathis to disperse a violent mob.
A few villagers and policemen suffered minor injuries in the incident, the police said. According to the police, Lingaraju (38) of Panakanahalli, was electrocuted while he was carrying out repairs on an electricity pole at Lokasara. As per the procedure, power supply should be cut till the completion of the repair work. However, power supply resumed even as Lingaraju was on the job. People staged a protest, blocked the village road, and demanded action against CESC officials.
They also threw stones on the police and CESC vehicles. “We are questioning some persons over the violence. The situation is under control,” a police officer said.
The Mandya Rural police have registered a case of death due to negligence against the CESC personnel.
