Small aircraft carrying 23 persons goes missing in Nepal
A Twin Otter aircraft belonging to a private airlines company carrying 23 persons including three crew members have gone missing in Nepal on Wednesday morning.
The aircraft belonging to Tara Airlines went missing at 8:10 am, nearly 15 minutes after taking off from Pokhara airport, nearly 200 kms north-west from Kathmandu, to Jomsom in Mustang district bordering China.
“The pilots had last contacted Pokhara airport at 8:10 am, after that we haven’t heard anything from them,” said an official from Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.
A search operation has been launched with two helicopters to trace the missing aircraft which aircraft was carrying two foreigners as well. It takes 20 minutes to reach Jomsom from Pokhara by air.
Local reports quoting villagers say they have heard loud noise at Rupse in Myagdi district leading to fears that the aircraft might have crashed.
The Pokhara-Jomsom route is a difficult route for flying allowing only small aircraft to operate in the region.
In May 2013, seven persons including two Japanese tourists sustained severe injuries when their twin otter aircraft crashed near Jomsom airport.
In 2012, 15 persons including 13 Indians were killed when their Dorneir aircraft on way from Pokhara to Jomsom crashed into a hill near the Jomsom airport.
