Tamil Nadu estimates Rs 8,481crore rain damage, seeks Rs 2,000crore aid from Centre
CHENNAI: Estimating damage by recent heavy rain to infrastructure to a tune of Rs 8,481 crore, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sanction Rs 2,000 crore immediately to enable the state “to sustain the relief and restoration operations with the same vigour.”
“The rainfall was extremely heavy and lasted for several days. Despite all the efforts taken by the state government, it has left a trail of damage and destruction,” Jayalalithaa said in a letter to Modi. She enclosed a memorandum, containing a detailed assessment of damage and requirement of funds.
She said the northeast monsoon had claimed 169 lives in the state since October 1, besides causing widespread damage to property and crop.
Chennai received second heaviest monthly rainfall recorded in the past century in just first 20 days of November, while Neyveli received 43.7cm on November 9 alone.
Roads, bridges, storm water drains, water supply and sewerage system and electricity network had been battered in several districts.
Recalling her sanction of Rs 500 crore for immediate relief and restoration work, Jayalalithaa said the assessment of damage required a much higher financial requirement. “The funds required are well beyond the resources available with the state including the state disaster response fund,” she said.
She said more than four lakh people in various parts of the state had been shifted to relief camps where they are being provided food and shelter. Rescue and relief operations were undertaken on a war footing.
