Tax raids at RK Marbles premises in 4 states
The income tax department Wednesday conducted raids at several premises of the R K Marbles group, revealing a large number of incriminating documents besides jewellery and Rs 10 crore in cash, officials said.
The group, which boasts of a production capacity of 2 million tonnes annually, is also engaged in cement manufacturing via its sister concern Wonder Cement.
Wonder Cement was one of the four companies for which arrested IAS officer Ashok Singhvi sought special mining relaxations from the central government in December last year. In the second week of December, the state mining department issued mining leases to Wonder Cement and the other companies without receiving the nod from the Centre.
Based on information about alleged massive tax evasion by the group, the I-T department raided residential properties, offices, factories and mines owned by the R K Marble group. The raids were conducted at 29 locations across four states-Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, I-T officials said. Most of these properties were concentrated in the Rajasthan districts of Udaipur, Ajmer (Kishangarh), Rajsamand, Udaipur, Banswara and Jaipur.
“The raids were conducted simultaneously at 29 locations this morning. We have recovered a lot of cash and jewellery, besides several incriminating documents,” Joint Director Income Tax (Investigations) told The Indian Express.
The raids, conducted by several teams comprising over 250 personnel of the I-T department and police, had yielded Rs 10 crore in cash till the writing this report. “The raids will go on for a couple of days,” Dagur said.
He rubbished rumours about the operation being conducted on the basis of information received from the Anti-Corruption Bureau, which recently busted a massive bribery racket in the state mining department.
“This has nothing to do with the ACB. As of now, we cannot say with certainty about any links with the bribery racket since there are a lot of documents that need to be analysed,” Dagur said.
The R K Marbles group also has operations in Vietnam, from where it exports marble to 45 countries. The group held the Guiness world record as the “largest marble company” in 2001 for producing 10,59,540.134 tonnes of marble blocks.
