100 MW clean energy plan for Surat
SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) plans to produce 100 mega watt (MW) of green energy by 2019-20 for which it will spend Rs 93 crore in the current financial year.
It will produce 16.2 MW of solar and wind power in the year 2015-16 and spend another Rs 4.5 crore for the generation of 540 Kilo Watt (KW) of solar power in the city before March 31 in its attempt to achieve self-sufficiency in clean energy production in the near future.
The solar power production is set to touch 1,390 kw mark in the city shortly.
“We need to produce 5 MW of solar power, which we will by 2015-16 to become country’s first solar city. Solar panels with 3.6 MW capacity would be installed at 14 places by December 2015,” said MN Chaudhary, executive engineer, energy efficiency cell, SMC.
Surat produces 850 KW of solar power from solar panels placed on the rooftops of Science Centre, its ward and other offices.
Surat is the only city in the country which has its own wind mills. A 12.6 MW wind power plant will become operational by September 2015. It will take the number of wind power plants to four and total wind power production of Surat to 30.3 MW.
“We incur an annual expense of Rs 161 crore on electricity. We plan to produce 100 MW of electricity by 2019-20 to save money,” municipal commissioner Milind Torwane said.
SMC plans to produce at least 40 per cent of power through wind, solar and other means to march onwards to become self-sufficient in clean energy production. It proposes production of 15.4 MW of power through solid waste and bio-gas too by 2015-16.
