Kidney racket probe finding startle cops
KOLKATA: Cops probing the Jadavpur kidney racket, which was busted on Friday, have revealed that accused Jamil Akhtar (42) was ready with a list of “willing donors” .
On Friday, Purba Jadavpur police busted the gang of kidney traffickers operating from North Bengal acting on a tip-off from a private hospital off E M Bypass.
Racket kingpin Akhtar, the donor’s son and the recipient’s maternal brother have been arrested, while police are on the lookout for at least two other persons. Akhtar is a resident of Hakimpara in Siliguri while the donor’s son Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury is from Katihar in Bihar. The third accused has been identified as Md Anisur (36) of Katihar.
“The accused targeted poor people from Alipurduar and convinced them to donate a kidney. He would then bring the persons to Siliguri and Kolkata to introduce them with prospective recipients,” said a source at Lalbazar.
South suburban police sources said that the donors got meagre amount for selling their kidney compared to the money that the agent received. “In this case, the recipient’s family has claimed to have paid Rs 3 lakh as advance in a Rs 6-lakh deal. But, the donor’s son has claimed that he had been paid only Rs 20,000,” said the source.
DCP-south suburban Santosh Pandey said that the accused was charged with several sections of cheating and the Transportation of Human Organs Act.
Kolkata Police and CID have found serious discrepancies in the manner in which wealthy patients are using the loopholes in the transplantation laws to allow a black market to operate from various nursing homes and hospitals off E M Bypass. Unlike this particular hospital which promptly informed police, many other hospitals are willing partners in the crime.
