Rs 360 crore seized from three builders in searches: I-T dept
The Income Tax department claimed to have seized nearly Rs 390 crore cash in searches at the residence and offices of three builders in the Vasai-Virar area and one of the builders is said to be a relative of a former Member of Legislative Assembly, Hitendra Thakur.
The Thane Unit of the IT department, under supervision of its Pune unit, raided houses and residence of Amey Builders and Property Developers, Swastik Spaces Limited and MAAD Group of Companies. “We seized Rs 75 crore from MAAD group of companies, Rs 258 crore from Swastik Spaces Ltd.and Rs 55.404 crore from Amey builders.
Rajiv Yashwant Patil, one of the directors of Amey Builders and the first mayor of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation and a relative of former Member of Legislative Assembly Hitendra Thakur,” said an I-T officer.
The officer added that search and seizures began in the end of July and continued till August first week, and was conducted by 120 officers who searched almost 60 office spaces and residential premises of three construction companies.
“We procured many documents related to land trading going on in Vasai-Virar region by these companies. Diaries with names of money lenders who provided funds for various projects have been found. We have access to documents which show discrepancies in terms of buying and selling of Transfer of Developing Rights (TDR), which show tax evasion by various other groups. The trail of unaccountable cash in transactions of land transfers in various dealings are being inspected,” the officer said.
Former MLA Thakur said, “All these people who are named and identified in the raids are friends but I am not connected to it.” Rajiv Patil’s brother Ajiv said , “This was a routine search and no unaccountable cash was found from us.”
