‘We need to cure our Western European arrogance’
The objective of strategic alliances is to minimise the level of investment on development projects and to effectively share the risk, says Fiat global chief Sergio Marchionne
Sergio Marchionne isn’t your fast-talking, cigar chomping Italian. In June 2004, when he was parachuted into the top job at Fiat, no one expected him to save the fast-sinking car maker. Fiat had an euro 2 billion loss and most analysts were ready to write its epitaph.
They obviously hadn’t known the man and his fierce resolve to lift Fiat out of the dumps and get it back on track. Today, the veritable outsider in the global auto industry with a North American accent, is being seen as the next Carlos Ghosn, the man who salvaged Nissan.
One day before announcing his tie-up with Tata Motors, Marchionne spoke to TOI’s Indrajit Gupta, Mansi Kapur and Charles Assisi about how he plans to revitalise Fiat .
