India takes Iran cure on pipeline
NEW DELHI: India is veering round to accept Teheran’s proposal that each country handles its own segment of the $7-billion Asian energy lifeline via Pakistan and the countries enter into bilateral agreements as buyer and seller of natural gas with a view to skirting the provisions of US laws that bar firms from investing more than $25 million in Iran.
This does not mean a pullout or sagging commitment on India’s part. “India is committed to the project.
Discussions are on with both Iran and Pakistan on issues regarding implementation of the project.we are also discussing combinations details of which are not for the media,”Talmeez Ahmad, top official in the oil ministry, said from Beijing where he is accompanying petroleum minister Mani Shankar Aiyar.
The plan will establish a buyer-seller relationship between New Delhi and Teheran and do away with the need for bilateral deal between India and Pakistan.
