Railways throws open container to pvt firms
NEW DELHI: In a pathbreaking move, the Railways on Thursday discarded their insular image by throwing open container train operations to the private sector.
The move, which has been eagerly awaited by the private sector, will change face of the country’s transportation and logistics sector.
The policy announcement by Railway minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav, puts an end to Railway subsidiary, Container Corporation of India’s (Concor) monopoly in the containerised transport segment.
Though policy guidelines from 1994 were in place allowing competition to Concor, in reality, no approvals have ever been given by any former Railway minister to private players, forcing the framing of a fresh policy on the issue.
