GSM cellular subscriber base touches 58 million
NEW DELHI: December saw a record addition of GSM cellular subscribers, which was double the average of previous eleven months.
At 3.2 million, GSM cellular recorded “highest monthly subscriber additions recorded by the telecom industry since the inception of the service (in 1995),” said the lobby group COAI in its latest monthly report.
All India GSM subscriber base reached 58.51 million at the end of 2005, up from the 37.37 million in year 2004 — which is a total addition of about 21 million new subscribers during last year.
“The subscriber growth was the result of a concerted effort by GSM industry to accelerate growth, and reach the government’s target of 200 million subscribers by 2007,” said COAI DG TV Ramachandran.
Bharti continued to lead the GSM pack with 16.33 million subscriber base, a market share of 28 per cent. BSNL, which added over a million mobile connections in December, ended the year with 14.3 million and a market share of 24 per cent.
The category C (low revenue areas) posted the highest growth. According to COAI among all the telecom circles, category C witnessed the highest growth rate of over 10 per cent — with North East and Orissa recording highest rates. In contrast, metros grew by 3.7 per cent.
